Wednesday Wishlist: Wedges

I'm feeling the seasonal pull that shows up each and EVERY season... the need to update my shoe collection. I've always been a fan of the wedge- but only when it's done right. I'm not about triple stacked wicker sandals, but I LOVE a classic pump and/or suede ankle boot. Don't you?? These neutral beauties would fit right in with all my favorite outfits. Now the important question... which pair do I pick?

PS... there's an ALL NEW RUE on digital newsstands today!! We ventured to Hollywood to see the magnificent home of Nate Berkus, the iconic offices of Kelly Wearstler, and more. It's basically killer. Check it out here

LA Loft by Caitlin & Caitlin

In the latest issue of Rue, we debuted a GORGEOUS LA loft by the fab design duo, Caitlin + Caitlin. Now, if my all-caps on GORGEOUS didn't convey it enough- this space is jaw-dropping. When we were putting together the issue, I got distracted and pored over the images for probably an hour. Then, I  proceeded to enter a somewhat dark depression fueled by a curiosity as to why I don't live there. I think you'll understand; it's perfection:

I love all of the emerald and am impressed by the creative approach to a narrow space. And that Murphy bed? Dying. True story- we HAVE a Murphy bed closet in our home but it's full of boxes. I'm willing to give up the extra storage if my place can look half as chic! To see the full story, click here. As always, there's a charming back story and yes- they really are both named Caitlin.

San Francisco

This blog post is coming from you from an airplane, which is literally the craziest thing in the world. Maybe not the craziest, but definitely up there. [I'm getting really good at travel puns.] The past few days with La-Z-Boy in North Carolina were so wonderful- I hope you followed along on Instagram to get an idea of what I was up to. I'll be sharing all of the details soon, and you'll want to tune in because there's a KILLER contest coming up!

The only bummer? The time change totally destroyed me and I've been so exhausted. On the red-eye there, I was seated next to an abnormal amount of unattended children who treated the airplane like their private jungle gym in the sky. I mean, not ideal sleeping conditions. On this flight, there's a poor baby who is pretty upset and just screaming their little lungs out. Needless to say, I'm feeling a little homesick, slightly fatigued, and a teeny bit anxious to get back to my San Francisco routine.

While I sit and dream about my pretty city, I thought I'd share my admiration through a few gorgeous photos. My friend Kyle is a very talented photographer and is constantly capturing San Francisco in the most amazing way. Here are a few favorites I pulled from his Tumblr, Technicolor Submarine:

I think it takes someone who truly loves the city to be able to photograph it in a way that conveys what the place is really about. Each of these photos tells a story, inspires emotions, and makes me love my home even more. You guys, I know I'm gushing but San Francisco really is the best place on earth.

Travel Essentials

Last night [or was it this morning??] I took the red-eye from one coast to the next. Hello, North Carolina! I'm here for a super fun event with La-Z-Boy and I can't wait to share the details. In the meantime, follow along on Twitter and Instagram for a behind the scenes look.

Since I've been traveling quite a bit lately, I've amassed a few good tips and essentials. Here's what keeps me sane while 30,000 feet in the air:
BLANKET: Airplane seats are pretty miserable. If the flight is longer than 2 hours, I bring a cozy blanket to make things a little more tolerable.
SUNGLASSES: I am the obnoxious girl who wears sunglasses on an airplane. It helps shield my eyes if I need a nap and also, the whole "sunglasses indoors" thing works wonders if you don't feel like talking to your neighbors.
SWEATER: Same logic as a blanket. You want to be cozy as can be when you're stuck in a pleather chair and the person in front of you decides to recline their seat back. A sweater is a magical wardrobe choice when you're in this scenario and you'll look cute when you arrive at your destination.
A GOOD BOOK: If you're reading a good book [as in a book so good you forget where you are], the flight will just fly by. Pun intended, obviously.
SPARKLING WATER: I tend to get motion sickness, so a sparkling water comes in handy- especially when the fasten seatbelt sign is on or the flight attendants are too busy to bring you a ginger ale.
FACE MIST: You know that horrific dehydration situation that happens to your skin after a long flight? One spritz of this and problem solved!
BALLET FLATS: I get really anxious when it's finally my turn to get through security. Ballet flats are easy to take off quickly, but are still cute.

Other tips? Don't drink a lot of coffee before you board unless you want to use the teeny tiny lavatory and don't feel guilty when you get an Auntie Anne's pretzel immediately upon landing. After dealing with airports, you totally earned it.

Seasonal Craving

Don't get me wrong, I love life in California. The constant sunshine and moderate winters are absolutely dreamy. Last December, I literally wore shorts and got a tan. Okay, a tan is a bit of an overstatement but I DEFINITELY got some Vitamin D.

However, one thing I find myself craving? The colors of fall. Watching the leaves go from green to yellow to red is for sure my favorite fall treat- though that is an easy accomplishment because I hate Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Since San Francisco is currently enjoying a heat wave, I took to Pinterest to find a little autumnal inspiration. Enjoy:

What a Weekend.

Whoa there, Monday! Where did you come from?? This weekend really flew by, but then again don't they always? Last week, I was suffering from chronic grumpiness and a killer migraine and basically refused to leave the apartment. So on Friday, Tim brought home a thin crust pepperoni pizza from our favorite shop and we watched This is the End. [It was hilarious.] Sometimes, you really need an at-home movie date to chase away the blues.

On Saturday, the weather couldn't have been better and we enjoyed the sunshine from our roof deck. Every time I go up there, I'm inspired to update the furniture [sparkly lights, included!] and throw a little party. Loving the inspiration I found on The Sweet Escape! Unfortunately, we share our roof access with 5 other tenants... and something tells me they're not that into summer-inspired soirees, champagne cocktails, or fifteen of my closest friends laughing until the stars come out.

Instead of going to church on Sunday, I picked up coffee and bagels and we watched the sermon on my iPad in bed. It's a bit unconventional, but it works for us and we still feel like we've started our Sunday off right. If you can't tell I've been a total homebody these days... but my mind and body have been craving it. I keep referring to this quote as a reminder that it's important to slow down and recharge from time to time.

PS. Yes, this photo did serve as a reminder that I still need to post about our apartment tour. Tune in next week... I promise to share all of the details!!

PPS. I've noticed lately that I'm writing much less in each blog post (except for "OMG isn't that shirt cute??")... but I started this blog because I love to write. SO, I'm going to slowly start sharing more personal details and see how I like it. And also see how you like it.

PPPS. Don't forget to enter the Outrage Fashion giveaway!! There is a $25 gift certificate up for grabs!!

Groundhog Day + a Giveaway!!

top Target // jeans Siwy // heels Zara // necklace Outrage Fashion c/o

If I were to take photos of my outfits EVERY single day... well, this exact outfit would be in about 70% of the photos. I literally have grabbed this top/necklace combo every time I've needed to go somewhere. My neighbors probably think that I'm living in some version of Groundhog Day but you know what, maybe I am. Someday, I'll move past my inclination to wear the same pair of jeans for a week straight before rotating onto the next pair.... but that day is not today.

The detailing on this necklace is perfection. I love the bright colors and unique structure. It even made a cameo in this picture which is pretty amazing. I got it from Outrage Fashion, a super cute online boutique based here in the Bay Area. I find myself browsing their collection about twice a day, and am currently coveting this and this.

Lucky for YOU, they're giving one lucky L&L reader a $25 gift certificate. Enter below... and GOOD LUCK!!

White Label

I was browsing through old pictures on my computer and came across a project of my own that I never shared. WAY back in June, I was thrilled to partner with an innovative event planning service: White Label. White Label is a "one-stop shop for event planning and design." Basically, you choose a theme that you love and get flowers, stationery, cake (for weddings), an escort card display, AND guidance from 2 of San Francisco's top event planners. There are six themes total, and each one is totally unique and fabulous.

Each theme is totally beautiful, but if you're wanting something slightly different- they're all quite customizable. You can stay in line with the original design or use the design as a jumping off point for your favorite colors and concepts. In order to showcase how truly customizable these are, the White Label team approached me to design a table on behalf of Rue Magazine using "Falling For" as my starting point. Here's what I came up with:

Photography: Lisa Lefkowitz

I wanted something dark, moody, and glamorous. I used La Tavola's sequined tablecloth and ikat napkins, gold rimmed dishes and flatware, and of course- the CB2 pig as part of the centerpiece. And the pennant banner on the wall? Handmade by me for Tim's 30th birthday party! Recycling at its best.

It was such a fun experience, and I was so happy with the outcome. I'd love to recreate the table setting for a girls' night in [bachelorette parties, anyone??] or a holiday dinner party. While I'm biased and think that my version is by far the best... I'm curious- which theme do you love the most??

A Few of My Favorite Things

I shared a few of my Fashion Essentials over at See what I'm loving [and why!!] here. A huge thanks to the Total Beauty team for having me!

Cold Front

jacket ASOS // top Target [only $24!!] // flats C-Label [on clearance!!] // jeans Siwy [also on clearance!]

San Francisco is known for its gorgeous, sunny autumns- but that doesn't mean we're exempt from colder weather. This past weekend, there was finally that crisp bite in the air. Now, I'm not complaining. I hail from a state that is known for having "all four beautiful seasons." FYI- it's usually pronounced SEAAASSSSONNNNNSSSSSS... and said while sipping a seasonal drink in a seasonal outfit with a seasonal hair color at a seasonally themed event. This tends to mean it's often way too cold or way too hot.

Now, while SF basically has a super-season [the same old season... all year long], we still get slight variations along with the rest of the country. The past few days have been the first in awhile where I thought "UGH, it is seriously freezing." I'm so glad I ordered this ASOS jacket a few weeks ago, and it's obviously going to come in very handy over the next few months. Only complaint? It's essentially the same exact color as my hair. Guess it's time to [finally] pay a visit to the salon...

Happy Birthday, Mama!

Taking a moment to wish my ADORABLE mom a very happy birthday!! Mom, you are the strongest woman I've ever known and I am so grateful for you. I have so much to thank you for- supporting me in all of my shenanigans; teaching me the importance of finding your passion; the countless number of times you've woken me up by blasting Stevie Nicks music and saying "Rise & Shine!!!" with a huge smile on your face. I am sad that I'm not able to celebrate with you in person, but don't worry... I'll be sure to have an Orange Dreamsicle Martini in your honor today. I love you!

Fall Flats

While I've slowly reintroduced heels into my life, I'm still a lifelong flats fan. I'm no giant [5'7'], but I'm tall enough that when I wear heels, I feel like I'm towering over people. Plus, I'm a bit of a wimp and always choose comfort. Luckily, flats have really upped their game the past few years and there are more options than ever. I love having a variety of flats in all styles- casual for jeans on the weekend, pointy-toed for a night out. TIP- if you're hesitant about wearing flats with skirts and dresses- pick a pointed pair! They elongate the leg and look more formal than the traditional ballet style.

The only downside is that I walk almost everywhere in the city- so my flats see a lot of wear and tear. I've had to bid farewell to a few favorite pairs and it's time for an update or two. I am thinking rich fall hues - burgundies, tans, grays, and black. And you can't go wrong with a little leopard, right?

Milan Street Style

While I've never actually attended a runway show, I follow fashion week month like a hawk. I love flipping through show recaps and seeing what I'm drawn to. Naturally, I'm having heart palpitations over Alberta Ferretti and Valentino- which we'll be talking about more later. Needless to say, it seems like all of my hippie-chic dreams will be coming true.

More than the shows, I love catching the street style. By far, Milan has been my favorite. Here's a few snaps by Phil Oh for VOGUE:

It's all so carefree and vibrant. It's tropical island vacation meets Haight Street meets flower market meets the outfits of my dreams. Clearly, if I ever go to Fashion Week- it should be in Milan. I love that every photo is an overwhelming reminder that fashion is supposed to be fun, and most importantly- there's always room for a little sense of humor.
