Today, July 14, 2014, is my dad's 60th birthday! My dad, or Papa as I call him, is a very kind, wise, and thoughtful man. We've had a pretty amazing relationship my entire life. He has been my biggest supporter every step [and misstep] of the way. When I showed interest in writing, he drove me across town to the writing camp during the summer. When I was a cheerleader in junior high, he came to all of the games, not to watch the sports or chat with other parents, but to watch me cheer. When I decided I was going to be a rock star, he helped me pay for the drum set and endured countless hours of very, very loud drumming. When I decided I was going to move to San Francisco, he not only gave me his approval... but he drove the moving truck and helped me carry the boxes up two flights of stairs. When I was young, he read me To Kill A Mockingbird once a year... though it wouldn't be until I was much older that I'd recognize the similarities between Papa and Atticus. He never was one to say "I told you so," or punish me for bad choices. Instead, he has guided me through the lessons. He also went above and beyond to show me how I deserved to be treated in a relationship, and when I found someone who had my dad's approval, that meant that I had found the right man to marry. I've always been extremely aware of my unique relationship with my dad, and it makes me all the more grateful to have him in my life.
To be truthful, I could write pages & pages of the reasons I love AND respect him. But I think that pictures speak a thousand words. To celebrate the man that made me who I am today, here are a few of my favorite pictures & memories from the past few years. Happy birthday, Papa!!
